Folio, Volume 1/2 340x227 mm, Volume 3 332x218 mm, modern uniform 1/4 calf with morocco lettering pieces; occasional marginal soiling and dampstaining, scattered marginal repairs generally not affecting text (with exception of repair to 4I5 in Volume 3), some contemporary inscriptions and marginalia, lacks 4 (of 5) blank leaves, Volume 1/2 general title heavily soiled, torn in blank outer margin and mounted, Volume 3 with sidenotes and some headlines cropped, title and next leaf supplied in facsimile, minor worming through genuine preliminary leaves generally not impairing legibility, corner off 6I2 with text loss. Second edition, revised and enlarged, the principal source for Shakespeare's plays on English history. Portions mainly concerning Anglo-Scottish relations were replaced with expurgated text by order of the Privy Council. In Volume 3 of the present set pages 1503-06, 1515-16, and the last 6 leaves of the index are supplied from the 1728 reprint of the original uncensored sheets. This set is accompanied by a copy of the 1728 volume of reprinted cancellanda (lacking title, pages 1-6, and 1563-74), loose in imperfect original boards.
